31 July 2010 Nottingham visit Mark II.

Ann, Mick and Lyn having a meal at the pub (the cook must have had a lot of carrots on hand)

Lyn Ann and Mick

Lyn's shoulder on the mend

Awoke at the Premier Inn near the East Midlands Airport which is an award winning airport south of Nottingham. It is ½ mile from the runway so we can see planes taking off and landing.

Mick was worried that we would be kept awake by aircraft arrivals and departures but as is the case with most UK buildings, this hotel has double glazing which makes for little noise entering from outside.

After watching the F1 qualifying we headed off to see Mick's cousin (Anne Wilcox) in Gotham.

Ann Wilcox is the daughter of Mick’s mother’s brother and one of 3 girls born to Mick’s uncle, George Arthur Powell.

He hadn’t seen her since he was in his teens.

We all immediately hit it off and spent the afternoon talking about our respective families and events over the past 40 odd years.

We went down to the local pub, The Sun, for dinner and had a great evening although the meal was disappointing.

When we got back to Ann’s place she fished out a few old photos of our families which Mick took pictures of (who needs photocopiers these days?).

We left at about 10pm in the twilight and relying on the Nokia N95, headed back to the hotel.

1 August 2010

A quiet day was planned today as we are still recovering from our London adventure so we spent the day watching the excellent coverage of the Hungarian Formula 1 motor race.

We were glad we did as Aussie Mark Webber won and is now leading the world F1 championship. Go Mark. He was born in Queanbeyan NSW and David Campese, a great Australian rugby player also from Queanbeyan, helped him financially when he was getting on his feet in Formula 1.

Another sad bit of news.

A relative of Mick’s died a few days ago here in the UK so we are delaying our departure from Nottingham to stay and represent the Australian contingent of the West family at the funeral.
